Amphitheatre

Posted by Ryan (Brisbane, Australia) on 14 January 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

This picture is the first on a series from a holiday to South Africa. Unfortunately I didn't have my DSLR at the time, so I had to beg & borrow to get my hands on cameras at times. Most of them were point & shoot digitals, but I hope you enjoy anyway ;)

This photo is from an area called the Drakensbeg, with the "Amphitheatre" in the background. It is over 5 kilometres in length and has precipitous cliffs rising thousands of feet along its entire length. The distance from the bottom of the valley floor to the highest point of the amphitheatre is more than 6000 feet (the summit being over 10000 feet above sea level). The Tugela Falls, the world's second tallest falls, plunge over 3110 feet (948m) from the Amphitheatre's cliff tops!
